HEAT TRAINING  - ST MARY'S, TWICKENHAM

Andy is an Ironman world championship competitor (Hawaii, 2009), and approached CHASES for a range of services including physiotherapy, nutrition, and physiotherapy.  CHASES physiologists and nutritionists worked together to provide an assessment of a heat training session (2.5 hours cycling on the treadmill at 32 degrees and no fans followed by a 30 minute run).  Measurements of sweat rate (bodyweight lost) and blood electrolytes, glucose and lactate were taken and feedback was given from a team of physiologists and nutritionists.

Cycling on the treadmill:  This has the feel of riding on the road because the bike responds in the same way to any small movements, requiring a high degree of concentration.  By warming up the lab or reducing the oxygen content of the air, we can effectively simulate riding conditions in the mountains or in the heat.  This is ideal for acclimatisation to heat or altitude, or simply as a training session.
